    @shawnwillden @TaliaRinger @deckeresq With my (still quite limited, anecdata based) experience, the difference is less between academia and Google, but more between cultures and sometimes single orgs. US academia is much harder on PhD students than EU, and Google is amazing in empowering single contributors.

      @shawnwillden @TaliaRinger @deckeresq I fully agree with @shawnwillden that I haven't yet seen such a density of managers and single contributors with PhDs in industry anywhere else but Google, so that's probably an outlier. On the academic side, I've seen bad, strictly hierarchical profs/advisors, and the opposite.

        @shawnwillden @TaliaRinger @deckeresq The best thing I can do is learn from those who manage their team by seeing eye-to-eye with all team members, and making it their job to help students succeed. I had the pleasure of working in such a team early in my career, and still try to emulate it.
