@shawnwillden @TaliaRinger @deckeresq With my (still quite limited, anecdata based) experience, the difference is less between academia and Google, but more between cultures and sometimes single orgs. US academia is much harder on PhD students than EU, and Google is amazing in empowering single contributors.On twitter.com

@shawnwillden @TaliaRinger @deckeresq I fully agree with @shawnwillden that I haven't yet seen such a density of managers and single contributors with PhDs in industry anywhere else but Google, so that's probably an outlier. On the academic side, I've seen bad, strictly hierarchical profs/advisors, and the opposite.Permalink On twitter.com
