      1. Story time: So, 7 years ago, @BarclaysUK unilaterally terminated my bank account because of dormancy without contacting me first. Even though I still regularly received spam (erm, material on exciting new products) at my Austrian address, the claim was I couldn't be contacted. 1/

It took a physical trip to to the UK, 1+h wait at a branch, and my threatening to stay there until the situation could be resolved (they asked me to come back in a week or so) to finally get back the money that was still in the account before closure. 2/

Since then, I have continued to receive "information material" at the non-UK address that seemed to be unusable to communicate relevant information about events such as account closure. 3/

In a twist of irony, @BarclaysUK has now - twice - asked for more information about my foreign tax status with paper forms requesting my tax numbers etc. I called them after the first request (with horrendous phone wait times) to explain that I no longer have an account. 4/

After receiving the second letter, I tried calling again today (from Austria, post-Brexit, with currently unknown phone charges), but gave up after 30 minutes without even learning how long the wait might roughly be. 5/

Twitter DM got a reply within 5 minutes but - quite ironically again - suffered a setback when I did not agree to share even more info (e.g. my postal address) through an insecure channel such as Twitter DMs. Was asked to pop into a branch or write a letter. British humor? 6/

I did quote the full @BarclaysUK "our reference" number from the letter (for, erm, referring to that communication thread) and further my old account sort code and offered to also send my old/closed account number. But I am not willing to give more data they shouldn't have. 7/

But I shouldn't complain. DMs are still flowing (with a roughly interplanetary delay), and I was just told that now (with the sort code), the issue can be taken care of and I should no longer receive mail. I'll leave it here and will update if the funny saga continues. 8/8
