Offering security/privacy benefits only for paid accounts has clear political consequences. In the current climate, this is problematic. While it is one mitigation against accounts abuse, it is not the only one. Other barriers for account creation than payment are possible.On twitter.com

Artificial slowdowns on account creation, requiring some form of identity proof besides possession of a throw-away email address, binding to stable hardware ID for the account creation itself, etc. are all possibilities. They have different trade-offs, but don't require payment.Permalink On twitter.com
