    1. @moxie is making good arguments in favor of centralized services, and I fully agree with some of them (e.g. on privacy). However, we have to agree to disagree on phone numbers as identifiers and his arguments on availability - which I see more as dependability - and control. @david415/1212080865561530368

    Email is still around exactly because it is stable and dependable, which goes beyond the availability of a single server (cluster). I keep thinking of it as the ISO metric screw thread of the Internet - an early standard with ready-made and compatible parts everywhere.

      It does one thing, and for that it doesn't matter (much) who implements it. For privacy, meta data hiding, etc., we will need a new standard. But before the whole world can bet on it, I believe that (whatever it is going to be) it will have to stabilize and, yes, federate.
