One of my biggest fears as an academic is that I will get better at bringing in grant money (which takes _a lot_ of effort/time) but no longer be able to do anything good with it myself because I have lost touch with actual research. The argument that grant money is primarily for financing PhD students and not for writing papers yourself is of course valid, but I counter: if I no longer actively do research on my own, can I still be a good supervisor, including the gut feeling of what is worth pursuing?

Looping back to the linked abstract, I am not completely in favor of either lottery systems or grant money based primarily on past success. I don't have a good answer on improving funding schemes. Likely it needs to be a combination of many factors.
